The 21st century with the Internet development as the backbone will integrate voice, data, and multimedia to present a pluralistic information era. Personal electronic products will all connect to the Internet and share the resources there. Miniaturization, mobilization, specialization, personalization and low price are now the developing trend. Meanwhile, a more intelligent and ergonomic user-interface making an appliance capable of listening, speaking, writing and learning will become increasingly stressed.

New generation user-interface technology

  • To establish 3C user interface that includes personalized operating interface as well as voice, image, and self-learning image/video recognition and indexing interface
  • To establish biometric techniques for facial recognition and speaker recognition
  • To establish multimodal interface integration technique
  • To establish natural language ontology for Chinese voice portal
  • To establish video mining technique for multimedia database indexing
  • To establish visual detection, tracking, and recognition techniques for specific objects such as faces and gesturesMobile information exchange technologyCatching up with the trend of wireless, mobile and broadband internet, CCL integrates mobile computing, multimedia, and info-stream services to develop the key technology on mobile information exchange.

The major R&D tasks are as follows

  • To develop mobile computing information exchange platform and environment design technology, such as mobile Internet middleware, mobile information service framework and mobile Internet service gateways
  • To develop mobile collaborative environment design technology, including the agent collaborated framework that integrates heterogeneous networks and Internet services such as WLAN, WPAN, GPRS and broadband wireless communications
  • To develop mobile multimedia application environment design technology, including the operating environment for multimedia application services with heterogeneous network integration such as WLAN, WPAN, GPRS and broadband wireless communications, as well as the mobile multimedia stream synchronization technology
  • To develop point-to-point mobile computing environment design technologyConfigurable processor and smart card key technologiesFollowing the trend of 3C integration and real-time two-way multimedia communications services, CCL has invested R&D on SoC and its application to establish embedded processor core technology.

The specific tasks include the following

  • To develop the low power/low cost embedded processor core technology based on the next generation information appliance (IA) requirements, including high-effective Java and Web computing technique and media streaming processing technique
  • To establish reconfigurable techniques for embedded processors and smart cards;
  • To develop Java card SoC simulative environment based on the Global Platform standards, while integrating advanced encrypting/decoding techniques
  • To establish multimedia interface technique as well as other key techniques such as HAVi-enabled device design
